Kensal Library: What we’ve been up to!

Natasha, Senior Customer Services Assistant at Kensal library, writes…

It’s been a busy six months at Kensal Library, with a packed program of events for our young users. Below, we share pictures from some of the stand out sessions.

March: African Dance Session

We had an African Dance Session in March. As you can tell from the photos, it was a great experience and everyone had a lot of fun and enjoyed the music.

Mother’s Day Craft

We made wonderful Mother’s Day rosettes in March and the children couldn’t wait to give them to their mums.

Bear Hunt in the Library!

We had the bear hunt in conjunction with Go Golborne in May.  The children wore great bear hats and the hunt around the library proved to be as adventurous as any real bear hunt! All of this was followed by tasty, healthy snacks.

A stall in front of the library about healthy eating also proved to be very popular.

Mini Beasts & Creepy Crawlies:

In June we had a Minibeast workshop hosted by Holland Park Ecology Centre.  The children had a chance to hold and examine a hissing cockroach or a giant Madagascan millipede.  Lots of interesting questions and observations were made and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the workshop.

Now it’s finally summer and we are looking forward to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge – Record Breakers – which starts on 11 July.  Come along and register for great incentives and a super gold medal if you complete the challenge.Summer Reading Challenge Logo

African Dance session at Brompton library

Stephanie Webb, Librarian at Brompton Library, writes:

We were very happy to host Faith and Mary from Healthier Life 4 You last week for a feelgood session of African Dance. We knew we were in for a good time as feedback from other sessions at North Kensington and Kensington Central libraries had been very positive.

Faith and Mary deliver a gentle workout – you’d hardly know you’re exercising as you can’t help moving to the rhythm of the African music. The audience was on the young side and were a bit unsure to start with, but by the end – and with the help of their parents and carers – they were showing me their moves on the way out!

Highly recommended and we hope to see them again soon.

Happy 50th Birthday Kensal!

We have had a wonderful start this month celebrating Kensal Library’s 50th birthday.  The day started with a special Baby Rhyme Time where we read some stories about birthdays and sung birthday themed songs and rhymes then the children were treated to milk and cookies followed by unwrapping a large birthday present containing, much to the delight of the children, Bookstart teddy bears!

Later on at the main event our customers came to help us celebrate with some African dancing and the children were enthralled with the face painter, Natalie, who created some marvellous designs and who, needless to say, was busy for the entire event!

Also popular was Ethnnie Farry who kept the children occupied with sewing some beautiful birthday badges.

A beautiful cake was made for the event by Gail’s Artisan Bakery and it really was the best carrot cake I’ve tasted!!

All three Golborne ward councillors paid a visit and showed their support for Kensal Library and Emma Dent Coad gave a short speech and helped with the cutting of the cake.

All in all it was a great event.  Thank you so much to our users for helping us celebrate and for signing our birthday card.

And thank you so much to all our staff who helped with organising the event and who helped out on the day and turned up in support and to celebrate with us.

Happy birthday to us!
