To celebrate London’s 2012 Olympic Games, each Kensington & Chelsea library has an ‘Olympic memory wall’, where for the past couple of weeks you have been telling us about your favourite athletes. Our Local Studies Library has also provided some images of the sporting past of the Royal Borough. Pop along to your local library to see what your fellow readers have been adding to these memory walls! To whet your appetite we have some previews below…
Olympic medal-winning cyclists Victoria Pendleton and Lizzie Armistead are very popular at Chelsea Library, and so is the show jumping. The staff noticed that originally the memory wall just had general sports stars from the past, but now it has tied in with this year’s London 2012 medal winners.
Jasna Šekarić, a Serbian sport shooter has been added to the wall at Chelsea Library too. She has won a total of five Olympic medals: one gold, three silvers and one bronze. She has also won three World Championship gold medals in the 10m air pistol and competed at six Olympic Games. And another claim to fame- she was taught literature by a member of staff from this library!
Gymnastics are very popular at North Kensington Library too: gymnasts old and new have been noted, including Nadia Comăneci, Beth Tweddle and Louis Smith (it was noted that the latter is ‘absolutely gorgeous’!). Someone also wrote ‘Gymnastics- a medal at last’. The fantastic Ethiopian runner, Hailie Gebrselassie was added here (as was Harry Potter and Quidditch – now we would like to see that as Olympic sport in Rio in 2016!)
Gymnastics and swimming are popular at Kensal Library, whereas at Notting Hill Gate Library rock climbing is a favourite sport and Oscar Pistorius, Muhammad Ali and Amir Khan are favourite sportpersons.
At Kensington Central Library football is a favourite sport and footballers Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas have been mentioned specially. Other favourite sports are figures skating, roller derby and rowing. Gymnastics has been added to the memory wall at this library too (with comments of ‘Wish I could do it’ and ‘I like it when they tumble!’). Lots of Team GB medal winners on this wall too such as Bradley Wiggins, Victoria Pendleton, Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis, Michael Jamieson & Rebecca Adlington- with an extra comment for her that we’re proud of her two bronze medals.
